Matt Conway Named to Olerud Watch List

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest left-handed pitcher and first baseman Matt Conway has been named to the 2013 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List, as announced by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Olerud Award, presented on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual Night of Champions, recognizes baseball players who excel both on the mound and in the field.
"These players are contributing to their teams' success in multiple ways," said Sam Dowell, Olerud co-chair. "To see the number they have compiled throughout the season is very impressive."
Conway is the only Demon Deacon to be put on the watch season, while Conway, Zane Evans (Georgia Tech) and Nick Howard (Virginia) are the only three players from the ACC.
The Birmingham, Mich. native served both duties as a freshman in 2010 but did not see the mound at all as a sophomore in 2011. His 2012 season was cut short due to a knee injury, but Conway has been back on the mound and at first this season.
At the plate, Conway has been a mainstay in the four or five spots in the batting order. He is second on the team with a .345 average and leads the team with 18 doubles. In addition, he is second on the team with 61 hits and 34 RBIs and is tied for second on the team with three home runs.
On the mound, Conway has proven to be a reliable midweek starter. He has appeared in 11 games and has made seven starts while posting a 2-1 record and a 4.14 ERA. He has pitched 45.2 innings and has been able to strike out 38 batters while walking just 12.
