WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Riley Ridgik scored two goals and Katie Stengel and Ally Berry added one apiece as No. 7 Wake Forest jumped on Miami early to earn a 4-0 win Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium.
The Demon Deacons (6-0-1, 1-0-1 ACC) scored in the third minute thanks to a pretty Katie Stengel header and seized command of the game against the Hurricanes (5-2-0, 0-2-0 ACC) in the 15th minute thanks to Ridgik's first goal. Berry netted the third Deacon goal right before the halftime break and Ridgik finished off the scoring in the second half, chipping the goalkeeper from 30 yards.
"Our plan today was to come out early, make a statement and put them away as early as we could," said Ridgik. "Luckily we got two goals within 10 or 15 minutes of each other which led to us being able to control the game."
Both of Ridgik's goals in the first multi-goal game of her career were top-notch efforts.
On the first, she ran onto a through ball from Katie Stengel on the right and finished expertly in a one-on-one situation with Miami goalkeeper Emily Lillard.
Ridgik's second goal in the 52nd minute came on a counter attack after a Miami corner kick on the other end. Katie Stengel corralled the cleared corner and turned upfield, finding Sarah Teegarden in the center. Teegarden looked up and lobbed a through ball to a streaking Ridgik on the left who saw Lillard well off her line and played a brilliant chip into the net from 30 yards.
"I saw the left flank was wide open, so I decided to run into that," said Ridgik. "Katie Stengel played Sarah Teegarden, who played me through. I looked up, saw the goalie come out and decided to chip her, and I got lucky and put it away."
The two goals gave Ridgik four for the season - the second-most on the Wake Forest squad.
Stengel's goal in the third minute was also of the high-class variety and set the tone of the game for the Demon Deacons. Jackie McSally sent Caroline Wootten free down the left side. Wootten took a few touches before playing a cross to Stengel at the near post, and Stengel crisply headed a shot into the far corner to put the Deacons up 1-0.
The goal was the 49th of Stengel's career, putting her one shy of a milestone 50th.
Berry netted her third goal of the season in the 37th minute. Taylor Waters collected the ball at the top of the box and played a through ball that Berry ran on to, finishing past Lillard.
Aubrey Bledsoe made a season-high five saves, though none really tested her, to earn her fourth shutout of the season in net.
With Wake Forest taking control of the game early, head coach Tony da Luz was able to get 20 different players game action, including Lane Czura, who made her Demon Deacon debut.
"Every game we do as much as we can, as early as we can, to hopefully get everyone in," said Ridgik. "(We) work for each other - the people on the field and the people off."
Wake Forest will host its final home game for almost a month next Thursday when it takes on Duke at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
