Asch and Fernandez Reach Final at W&M Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Wake Forest freshmen Samantha Asch and Luisa Fernandez reached the doubles final of their first collegiate tournament as the Demon Deacons opened up their fall season at the William & Mary Invitational.
Asch and Fernandez defeated teams from Marshall and Dartmouth to earn a spot in the final of the Sones Doubles Flight. They will take on South Carolina's Natalie Looney and Katerina Popova in the final tomorrow.
The Deacs posted a strong day overall, going 6-2 in singles and 4-4 in doubles.
Fernandez, Kimmy Guerin and Kristina Centenari all earned their first college singles wins. Fernandez beat Utah's Lucia Kovarcikova, Guerin topped VCU's Salome Kvitashvili and Centenari took down Utah's Erica Valimaki.
Also winning in singles were sophomore Andrea Retolaza Andrade who defeated Oklahoma's Abbi Melrose, sophomore Xue Zhang who downed Utah's Paige Mills and junior Karen Forman who knocked off William & Mary's Julia Casselbury.
Forman and Guerin also teamed up to notch their first doubles win together, defeating Utah's Luisa Garstner da Rosa and Sarah Richter in the consolation draw of their flight.
Play will continue in the tournament tomorrow.
