HARRISONBURG, Va. - Wake Forest defeated James Madison 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-19) on Friday behind 14 kills from Matalee Reed and 10 kills from Kristin Grissom.
Sophia Dodd registered 36 assists while Kylie Hargreaves had a team-high 15 digs. Reed and Ashlee Rusk each had four block assists in the win.
Wake Forest begins the season 9-1 for the first time since 2003. The Demon Deacons also posted their fifth sweep of the year.
The action was even through the first set early with Wake Forest and JMU tied at 7-7. With Wake Forest leading 10-9, the Demon Deacons went on a 5-0 run to push its advantage to 15-9.
Later in the set with Wake Forest holding a 16-13 advantage, the Deacs went on a 9-3 run to take the first set 25-16. Russell and Reed had five kills each to lead the team in the first set while Grissom had four.
Wake Forest started out quick in the second set, going up 10-1 in a run that included three service aces. The Demon Deacons controlled the pace for the rest of the set, winning 25-14.
The third set proved to be closer with the teams battling to a 15-15 tie midway through. Wake Forest closed out the set on a 10-4 run to win the match 3-0.
The Deacs hit .293 for the match while holding JMU to a hitting percentage of .144.
Wake Forest returns to action on Saturday with two matches. The Deacs will face Cleveland State at 10 a.m. and Campbell at 5 p.m. to finish out the JMU Invitational.
