COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 23 Maryland scored in the fourth minute and held on despite getting outshot 17-6 to defeat No. 6 Wake Forest 1-0 on Sunday at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.
Hayley Brock's early goal held up as enough to give the Terrapins (5-3-0, 2-1-0 ACC) an important ACC win and knock the Demon Deacons (7-1-1, 2-1-1 ACC) from the ranks of the conference's unbeaten.
The Deacons poured on the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Terps by a 9-1 margin and coming close to equalizing on a couple occasions, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
Rachelle Beanlands earned the shutout in net for the Terrapins, making six saves.
Brock's score was the product of a turnover by the Deacons in their defensive third. The ball rolled to Lauren Berman, who slid a through ball behind the defense, sending Brock free. Brock took a few touches and then blasted a shot past Bledsoe to put the Terrapins in front.
The Deacons had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 62nd minute. Riley Ridgik found Kendall Fischlein wide open on the right, and Fischlein played a perfect low cross across of the six-yard box. Annick McBryar came crashing in towards the ball and stretched to get a leg on it, but Beanlands was there to grab it from point-blank range.
Megan Curan also came close to scoring for the Demon Deacons in the 75th minute with a powerful diving header off a corner kick, but it went inches wide of the right post.
The Demon Deacons will continue their four-match road stretch next Thursday when they travel to take on Boston College at 7 p.m.
