
Deacons Dominate on First Day of WFU Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team rolled through the first day of the Wake Forest Invitational, posting a combined 12-1 record in singles and doubles Friday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Kimmy Guerin, Andrea Retolaza Andrade, Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner led the way for the Demon Deacons, each winning two doubles matches and a singles match.
Guerin posted a gutty come-from-behind victory over Stetson's top player Andrea Crespo in the A Singles flight, winning 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-0. Retolaza Andrade joined her in the A Singles quarterfinals with an efficient 6-3, 6-1 win over UNCG's Stephanie Falcon.
Guerin and Retolaza Andrade teamed up to win two matches in the B Doubles flight and reach the semifinals. They opened with an 8-1 win over Falcon and Amy Ellis of UNCG and followed that up with another 8-1 victory against Anna Abadias and Brittany Boys of Richmond.
In B Singles, Xue Zhang held off Lisa Grosselius of Charlotte 6-2, 7-6 (7) to reach the quarterfinals, and Gardiner topped Davidson's Sarah Stein 6-2, 6-1 in the C Singles first round to also book a spot in the quarters.
Gardiner and Zhang cruised through their first two A Doubles matches as well, taking down Brites Moniz-Soares and Laina Cummer of Davidson 8-1 in the opening round and Tamara Stanic and Natasha Afridi 8-4 in the quarterfinals.
Karen Forman and Brigita Bercyte rounded out Wake Forest's doubles sweep, shutting out Georgina Pons and Nil Horoz of Richmond 8-0 in the C Doubles quarterfinals. Forman also won her singles match in D Singles in a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Richmond's Brittany Boys.
Freshman Kristina Centenari took both of her singles matches Friday, beating Appalachian State's Megan Mullen 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of E Singles before downing Pons 6-0, 6-2.
Play will continue tomorrow at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex with the doubles semifinals and singles quarterfinals and semifinals, as well as consolation matches. Doubles will start at 9 a.m. with singles to follow.
