ROCKY FACE, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team opened the 2013-14 season with a round of 301 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic on Friday at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
The Demon Deacons are in 11th place at 13-over par. Host Georgia Tech got three under-par rounds and opened with an 8-under 280. The Yellow Jackets hold a 10-shot lead on ACC-foe North Carolina which opened with a 2-over 290.
"It wasn't a great score today but I'm encouraged," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "Looking at the guys from a coaching standpoint, I'm a little surprised at what we shot. The potential is certainly there with these guys. I thought the freshmen played pretty well today in their first rounds. We just need to come back and fire a couple of good scores the last two days and we'll be just fine."
Three freshmen made their Demon Deacon debuts this weekend. Danny Guise led the team in his first-career round as he made three birdies and just four bogeys for a solid 73 and is tied for 17th. Woody Woodward is tied for 33rd after an up-and-down round of 3-over 75. Woodward made five birdies, five pars and eight bogeys in his round.
Fellow freshman Clancy Waugh made the turn in 2-over 38 but hit a rough patch coming home and finished with a 7-over 79.
Sophomore Davis Womble made one birdie and five bogeys on Friday for a round of 4-over 76. Senior Thomas Birdsey opened his day with a pair of double-bogeys on the opening nine and made the turn in five-over par. But he settled down and played the second nine in even par to post an opening round 77.
Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans made six birdies in his round on Friday and holds the individual lead at 5-under par.
The Demon Deacons will be off tomorrow at 10:05 a.m. ET off the tenth tee with Auburn and South Carolina. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of both the final two rounds.
