Deacons Cruise to 9-0 Win over Coastal Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest showed no signs of rust in its first match of the season, winning all 12 matches en route to a 9-0 shutout of Coastal Carolina.

In order to give more players opportunity to play in the lineup, the match consisted of four doubles matches, together worth one point, and eight singles matches.

Wake Forest swept through doubles against the Chanticleers, winning all four matches to take a 1-0 lead. Romain Bogaerts and Maksim Kan were first off the court at the No. 3 position, blowing by Renan Samed and Rick Timmerman 6-1.

The next three matches all went in Wake Forest's favor by 6-4 scorelines. Sam Bloom and Jon Ho took down Jabor Al-Mutawa and Ted Nilsson at No. 2, Anthony Delcore and Aws Laaribi clinched the doubles point, beating Garik Yedigarian and Stefan Jakubov at No. 4 and No. 30 Adam Lee and Pedro Dumont completed the sweep at No. 1 against Phillip Tsangarides and Leo Christofides.

Singles would go just as smoothly for the Demon Deacons. Laaribi raced to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Christofides at No. 6 and Dumont was close behind with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Timmerman at No. 5.

Ho knocked off Al-Mutawa 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 position and Jaya Billa clinched the win for the Deacs with the first dual match victory of his career, taking down Hunter Whalen 6-1, 6-4.

No. 20 Bogaerts dispatched Tsangarides, an Alabama transfer, 6-0, 6-4 at the top position and Kan, a freshman, posted his first dual match win at No. 3, downing Nilsson 6-2, 6-3. Bloom closed out Renan Samed 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 8 position and No. 59 Lee completed the sweep at No. 2, beating Garik Yedigarian 6-5 (3), 6-5 (3).

Deacons Down Charlotte 9-0 to Sweep Doubleheader

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 19 Wake Forest completed its perfect opening day, defeating Charlotte 9-0 at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.

The Deacons won doubles and grabbed four quick singles matches to earn the win before grinding out victories in the remaining matches to complete the sweep.

The Deacs won three quick matches to take the doubles point against the 49ers.

Anthony Delcore and Aws Laaribi were first off the court at the No. 4 position, blasting Carl Solik and Alex Weber 6-2. Minutes later Wake Forest's top team of No. 30 Pedro Dumont and Adam Lee finished Alex Calott and Jack Williams off 6-3. The clinching match came at No. 3 where Sam Bloom and Jon Ho downed Forrest Edwards and Paul Cisti 6-2.

Charlotte's lone doubles win came at the No. 2 position where Kamil Khalil and Jordi Massalle Ferrer edged Romain Bogaerts and Maksim Kan 6-5 (2).

In singles, Delcore quickly made the lead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Weber, and Kan followed that with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Khalil to push the score to 3-0. Billa took down Nate Shanok 6-2, 6-3, and Ho clinched the overall match in a second set tiebreak, beating Jack Williams 6-3, 6-5 (4). The sixth point then came courtesy of Sam Bloom, who took down Paul Cisti 6-5 (0), 6-4.

The remaining matches would all be battles, but the Deacs came through in three three-setters to complete the sweep.

Laaribi earned the Demon Deacons' seventh point at the No. 4 position, battling past Alex Calott 6-2, 3-6, 6-5 (1). Dumont came on strong in the final set as well at No. 5, outlasting Massalle Ferrer 6-5 (3), 5-6 (5), 6-4. In the final match on court, No. 59 Lee won the last five games of the match to take down Edwards 6-5 (6), 4-6, 6-3.

The Demon Deacons will be back in action with another doubleheader next Saturday, January 18, hosting Brown at 10 a.m. and ETSU at 6 p.m. at the Indoor Tennis Center.
