WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team started the season strong Monday, beating College of Charleston and UNCG in a doubleheader opener.
With a lineup heavy on freshmen and sophomores, the Demon Deacons (2-0) knocked off the Cougars (1-2) 6-1 before dispatching the Spartans (0-1) 7-2 to post their first 2-0 start since 2010.
"I was really pleased with everybody's performance today," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "It was great to see the freshmen step up the way that they did. You never know what you're going to get with freshmen on that first day out, but they handled themselves great."
Underclassmen occupied the top six positions in both matches with freshmen Samantha Asch, Kristina Centenari, Kimmy Guerin and Luisa Fernandez earning the first dual match wins of their careers.
Wake Forest swept both College of Charleston and UNCG in doubles.
Against the Cougars Samantha Asch and Luisa Fernandez cruised to a 6-0 win over Mara Argyriou and Kelly Kambourelis at the No. 2 position and Kimmy Guerin and Andrea Retolaza Andrade dug out of an early hole at the No. 3 position to clinch the doubles point, beating Brooke McAmis and Samantha Maddox 6-4. Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang completed the sweep at the top position, taking down Jamie Harrell and Katherine Schofield 6-1.

Gardiner and Zhang finished things at the top position, taking down Yasmin Franco and Jamie Grinberg 8-5.
The Cougars pushed the Demon Deacons in singles, taking four of the matches to third set 10-point tiebreaks, but the Deacs won three of them to win the match.
Guerin got Wake Forest's first singles win at No. 3, rolling past Mara Argyriou 6-1, 6-4, and Zhang made the score 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Grace Baker at No. 6. But the rest of the matches would go the distance.
