WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Dearica Hamby averaged 24 points and 15 rebounds in three games last week and was named the ACC Player of the Week on Monday.
Hamby led the Demon Deacons to a pair of road victories over Clemson and Boston College. She recorded a double-double in all three games and has a total of 16 double-doubles on the season.
This is the first ACC Player of the Week honor for Hamby. Coupled with Chelsea Douglas' Player of the Week honor on Dec. 30, Hamby and Douglas are the first Demon Deacon duo to earn ACC Player of the Week honors in the same season since 1985-86. Amy Privette and Lisa Stockton were each named Player of the Week that season.
Hamby started the week with a tremendous game in the Deacons' first ACC victory at Clemson. She scored 29 points and grabbed a career-high tying 18 rebounds. She also swatted a career-high four shots and had two steals.
In the game against No. 7 North Carolina, Hamby scored a game-high 22 points and pulled-down 11 rebounds. On Sunday at Boston College, the Marietta, Ga., native led the Deacons with 21 points, 16 rebounds and four assists. She played nearly 40 minutes in the game and would convert four-straight free throws in the final 47 seconds to seal the victory.
For the season, Hamby is leading the ACC in scoring and rebounding at 21.1 ppg and 11.5 rpg. She is chasing Tracy Connor's school-record of 20 double-doubles in a season and she is also trying to become the first Demon Deacon to lead the ACC in scoring for a season.
