TULSA, Okla. - Jon Ho clinched a spot in the main draw the ITA All-American Championships with another upset victory in the third round of qualifying on Wednesday to lead Wake Forest men's tennis.
The Wake Forest junior triumphed over Florida's Gordon Watson, ranked 70th nationally, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Ho and Watson were knotted at 3-3 in the decisive third set, but Ho twice broke serve to clinch the victory.
After earning three wins over the weekend to advance out of pre-qualifiers, Ho knocked off fourth-seeded and No. 50-ranked Ben Wagland from Georgia in the first round of qualifiers, then defeated Denver's Diego Rocha in the second round.
Out of the 16 competitors who advanced out of the pre-qualifiers, Ho was one of just three to reach the main draw.
"Obviously Jon's having a really good tournament. He worked really hard this summer and we've done some great things from a fitness and conditioning standpoint," head coach Tony Bresky said. "He made a bit of a jump over the Winston-Salem Open that gave him a boost of confidence and an understanding of what he needs to do to take the next step in his game. He's on a good run and we're all looking forward to seeing him continue."
No. 20-ranked Romain Bogaerts will open play in tomorrow's main draw.
Ho will take on Georgia's No. 12-ranked Austin Smith in the first round of the main draw at 11:30 a.m. ET. At around 2 p.m. ET, Bogaerts takes on unranked Albert Wagner from Louisville, who has already defeated a pair of Demon Deacons this fall.
"Obviously we're hoping to see some good things in the main draw," Bresky added. "In Romo's case, he's coming off an injury so he's anxious to get out there and compete. In Jonny's case, he's hoping to build on the momentum and continue the run he's been on the past few days."
