CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Karen Forman won two singles matches to tab a spot in the main draw and two doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 as the Wake Forest women's tennis team began play at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional on Thursday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Forman won both of her qualifying singles matches to advance into the main draw which starts tomorrow morning. She topped Charlotte's Tyler Baker in the first match 6-1, 6-4 before defeating Masey Demoss of UNCG 6-3, 6-2, to earn a spot in the singles main draw. She will face Caitlin Cridland of Winthrop tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. in the main draw.
The Deacons also began the main draw doubles matches on Thursday, with two teams notching a place in the round of 16. Kasey Gardiner and Luisa Fernandez, a fifth seed in the draws, had a bye in the first round. They won their match against Libby Scott and Honami Yazawa of Coastal Carolina 8-3 to advance to the round of 16.
Doubles duo of Xue Zhang and Courtney Meredith both also advanced to the round of 16 with a 8-6 first round victory over Karangozishvili and Tamara Stanic of Campbell, followed by another 8-6 win, this time against Capannolo and Taylor Zaytoun of NC State in the round of 32 to advance to the round of 16 tomorrow.
In addition, Samantha Asch and Kimmy Guerin paired up and won their first round matchup 8-0 against Erica Braschi and Maria Camara of Elon. In the second round they fell to the ITA preseason No. 58 doubles pair Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle of North Carolina 8-2 to knock them out of the main draw.
Tomorrow begins with the round of 16 main draw doubles matches in the morning. The first matches of the singles main draw will follow the conclusion of the doubles matches.
