WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest women's soccer came out on the winning end of a wild game, defeating Boston College 4-3 at Spry Stadium on Thursday night.
The Demon Deacons (5-8-2, 3-4-1 ACC) twice took the lead in the first half, but the Eagles (10-7, 3-5 ACC) battled back each time. Boston College took its first lead in the second half, but Wake Forest responded with two straight goals to earn the victory.
After being frustrated all night by four superb BC saves and another time by the crossbar, Riley Ridgik's seventh shot finally found the back of the net as she notched her team-leading fifth score of the year off a nifty cross from fellow senior Kim Marshall. That goal gave Wake Forest a 4-3 lead in the 80th minute, which the Deacs never relented.
Sarah Teegarden recorded her first-career multi-goal game as she scored each of the Deacons' first two tallies. In the sixth minute, a long ball from Taylor Waters found Teegarden open, who then beat a defender and snuck a shot inside the left post to make it 1-0.
Hayley Dowd notched her 13th goal of the year for BC just 75 seconds later, beating Lindsay Preston from close-range to even the game at 1-1.
At the 27:08 mark, a Kendall Fischlein corner found Ally Haran, who headed it to Teegarden for the finish to put the Deacs ahead 2-1.
The Eagles responded with two straight goals, one from Andrea O'Brien in the 32nd minute and another from Dowd in the 59th minute, to take their first lead, 3-2.
Ally Haran found the equalizer 10 minutes later, when another Fischlein corner found Claudia Day, who deflected it to Haran for the close-range finish, knotting the game at 3-3 to set up Ridgik's game-winner.
GOOD IN GOLD
Wake Forest wore its throwback gold jerseys for just the third time this year, and improved to 3-0 in them. The Deacs are 0-6-1 in black and 2-2 in white.
FIRST CAREER...
Ally Haran earned her first-career assist in the 28th minute and followed that up with her first-career goal in the 69th minute.
Kendall Fischlein recorded her first-career multi-assist game, with both coming off corner kicks.
Sarah Teegarden had her first-career multi-goal game. In fact, she doubled her career goal total coming into the game (two) with a pair of scores.
Claudia Day tallied her first-career assist.
PELTING AWAY
Wake Forest matched its season-high of 25 shots, reaching that total for the first time since the season-opener against Wright State.
.Sarah Teegarden took a career-high six attempts and Riley Ridgik matched her season-high with seven shots.
The Deacs doubled their previous season-high of goals scored (two).
LONG TIME COMING
The win gives the Deacons their first winning streak of the season, after also beating No. 10 Virginia Tech on Oct. 18.
TOO LITTLE TOO LATE
No. 7 Notre Dame, currently fourth in the ACC, defeated Clemson 1-0 tonight. The Fighting Irish improved to 6-2 in league play, officially eliminating Wake Forest from ACC Tournament contention. With just two games left, the Deacs will be unable to get back to .500 and therefore will be ineligible to receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
ON DECK
Wake Forest plays in its home finale, welcoming Syracuse to Spry Stadium at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Demon Deacons will be recognizing their four graduating seniors: Riley Ridgik, Kim Marshall, Jessica Mandarich and Lindsey Ervin.
