WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Ricky Greensfelder scored four minutes into overtime as No. 22 Wake Forest defeated No. 9 Louisville 1-0 on Saturday night at Spry Stadium.
With the win, Wake Forest (10-7-0, 5-3-0 ACC) will receive the fifth seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Clemson next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Clemson.
After battling to a scoreless tie, Greesnfelder took a pass from Kris Reaves and weaved through the Louisville defense and beat the goalkeeper for the game-winning goal. It was the second overtime goal for Greensfelder this season as he also lifted the Deacons in a win over UConn on Sept. 5.
Wake Forest goalkeeper Alec Ferrell posted his third clean sheet of the season as he made six saves including several crucial stops. The teams went scoreless in the first half though Wake Forest held a 6-5 advantage in shots. Louisville had five corners in the half but Wake Forest neutralized all five.
Jon Bakero had a chance in the 18th minute as he curved a shot that just curved above the goal. Will Vitalis of Louisville had the best chance for the Cardinals in the 40th minute as he got the ball on a quick restart and shot it but Ferrell made a heads-up save to keep the game even at 0-0.
Bakero again had an opportunity with 20 seconds left in the first half but the shot trickled wide as the teams ended the half in a scoreless tie.
Louisville had 13 shots in the second half and peppered Ferrell who made four stops in the period. Three of those shots came around the 62nd minute which all went high. In the 66th minute, Louisville's Ben Strong had a breakaway but was stopped by Ferrell.
The Cardinals had one shot in overtime but it was blocked, setting the stage for Greensfelder's dramatic score. After Reaves cleared space on the right side, he fed Greensfelder who maneuvered to score the goal and end the game.
