CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Wake Forest women's soccer saw its 2014 season come to a close in a 2-1 loss to Miami at Cobb Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Kim Marshall scored on a late penalty kick to cut Wake Forest's (5-9-3, 3-5-2 ACC) margin to one goal in her final game in Old Gold & Black, but the Hurricanes (4-13-1, 2-7-1 ACC) were able to run out the clock in the season finale.
After a scoreless first half, Ashley Flinn put the Hurricanes on the board at the 58:00 mark. The Wake Forest defense attempted to draw an offsides call, but Flinn slipped behind and beat keeper Lindsay Preston 1-v-1 to make it a 1-0 game.
In the 73rd minute, Miami was fouled just outside the box. Gianna Dal Pozzo fired a laser of a free kick into the lower-right corner of the net as the Hurricanes secured a multi-goal lead.
After a foul in the box, Marshall scored her third goal of the season to cut the deficit in half in the 82nd minute.
The Demon Deacons looked for the equalizer in the closing minutes, but were called offside once and a Katie Dry shot missed high as the Hurricanes closed out the win.
Preston saved six of Miami's eight shots on goal.
Wake Forest's other senior starter, Riley Ridgik, was forced out of the game after being shaken up on a hard foul late in the first half.
The Deacons miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time in head coach Tony da Luz's 18-year tenure. Wake Forest took on eight ranked opponents this season (2-4-2), and struggled on the road (1-6-1). Wake Forest finishes in a tie for eighth place in the ACC, a spot better than a year ago.
