
Hamby Scores 40 in Win Over Montana

CANCUN, Mexico - Wake Forest finished the Cancun Challenge with a 73-60 win over Montana. Senior Dearica Hamby tallied a career-high 40 points in the victory.
Hamby finished with a career-high 40 points on 13-of-17 shooting from the floor. She was 14-of-16 from the free-throw line and grabbed eight rebounds in the game. Freshman Amber Campbell added 17 points, five rebounds and four steals. Campbell scored 13 points in the second half.
Wake Forest improved to 6-1 with the win.
Neither team led by more than five points in a very close first half. The Demon Deacons took a quick 5-2 lead after a three-point play by Hamby. The Lady Griz swung the lead back in their favor, 10-9 on an Alycia Sims jumper. Wake Forest took its biggest lead of the half, 15-10, on an offensive rebound and putback by Milan Quinn.
Wake Forest kept the lead until the final two minutes of the half. Shanae Gilham drained a three-pointer to give Montana a 31-28 lead with 1:23 remaining and took that score to the locker room at halftime. The Deacons opened up the second half with a 7-0 run to take the lead 35-31. Campbell stole the ball and went down for an easy layup. Hamby scored the next five points to open up the lead and force a Montana timeout.
Wake Forest was clinging to a 53-51 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the game when Campbell hit a three-pointer from the right corner. The shot gave the Deacons energy and started a 14-3 run that broke the game open in the final minutes. Hamby laid the ball in to give Wake Forest a double-digit lead, 64-54, with just under two minutes to play. Hamby, Campbell and Mykia Jones all hit free throws down the stretch to secure the 73-60 victory.
NOTES:
Senior Dearica Hamby scored a career-high 40 points in the win. Her previous career high was 32 last year against Pitt.
Freshman Amber Campbell also had a career high with 17 points. She scored 13 in the second half.
The Demon Deacons went 23-for-28 (82.1%) from the free-throw line.
Dearica Hamby moved up to 11th on the school's all-time scoring list. She now has 1,300 career points.

The Deacons travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face Michigan as part of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.
Tip-off on Wednesday is set for 7 p.m.
This will be the Demon Deacons' sixth appearance in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Wake holds a record of 2-3 in its previous five appearances. The Deacons last played in the challenge in the 2012-13 season when fell at Illinois 95-82.
Michigan and Wake Forest also faced-off in the 2010-11 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Wolverines came out of the gate on fire and would shoot 66 percent for the game en route to a 91-58 victory on Dec. 1, 2010, in Ann Arbor. That was the only previous meeting between the two schools.
