Wake Forest Head Coach Danny Manning
Opening statement...
"We have shown some improvement since the first scrimmage that we had against College of Charleston. I was pleased with the ball movement. We probably moved it too well as we had 20 turnovers. I thought we did some okay things on the court. We still need to tighten up some execution flaws on the offensive end in terms of getting open at the right time and getting open in the scoring area. I thought our guards did a good job of getting the ball inside to our big men and I thought our big men did a good job at working although we can get better in both of those categories.
"Defensively, we have a ways to go. This was a team that played hard and is well coached but we have to do a better job on the glass. We should not come away with only a seven-plus advantage on the glass. We should probably have more of a distance between the two teams rebounding-wise based solely on the height difference that we had. Those guys played hard and for a while our transition defense was nonexistent because they were attacking and getting into the paint. They gave us all we could handle for a while there."
On the substitutions within the game...
"The one thing I told the guys before the game is the scrimmage and this game will be the last time I substitute as freely as I have been doing. I would like to play this many guys if they give me a reason to play them and they earn that in practice. I'm not the type of coach to put you in and say show me what you can do. Show me what you can do in practice and I might put you into the game. If I do put you into the game, make sure you are helping us be successful. The guys need to understand that they need to be ready when they check into the game."
On the play of forward Devin Thomas...
"Devin is a talented player. We are going to make sure we give him an opportunity to score as long as he continues to use good technique and follow the game plan. I thought he did a really good job tonight. He finished with a double-double and I know that he was 7-7 in the first-half."
Junior Forward Devin Thomas
On his offensive performance...
"My teammates did a great job finding me tonight and giving me the ball in good positions. That made it easier for me to score tonight."
On the control of the team throughout the game...
"I think we relaxed a lot...we turned the ball over too much and should have rebounded more. We have a whole week to prepare for UNC Asheville and we'll be prepared for next Friday."
Junior Guard Madison Jones
On the team's performance...
"I think we played pretty well. It was a step in the right direction. We still have a long way to go to where we want to be. We just try to dominate the court and get some touches first. We have some good shooters on the team, like Miles and Rondale. We just need to keep working on it."
On what needs to be improved...
"Attention to detail. That's all it is. It's all the little things that we have to correct. Turnovers, passes, different things like that. It's always hard to pay attention to the detail, so that's what we need to do better. We have to go to practice and fix those things."
Junior Guard Codi Miller-McIntyre
On rebounding from the guard position...
"Every time we come down the court, we take pressure off the forwards. We can take pressure off of Devin and others. Just helping them rebound is what we need to do. That can [lead to] a great play."
On getting into foul trouble...
"I think that was a lack of communication between us. We sometimes lose our focus in the game and that is what we need to work on. Knowing which numbers are on the boards and where to move."
On Madison Jones' play...
"Madison was great. I think he is finally realizing how quick he is and how well he can move around the court and defend. Once he realized, he just kept attacking and we need him to do that all throughout the year."
