
Deacons Out-Shot in 84-69 Loss to Minnesota

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest was unable to cool down Minnesota, falling 84-69 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge inside the LJVM Coliseum on Tuesday night.
The Golden Gophers (5-2) hit 12 of their 24 3-point attempts and out-shot the Demon Deacons (4-4) in every facet to earn the victory.
Miles Overton scored a career-high 14 points, finishing 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to lead Wake Forest. The rest of the Deacons struggled from the line - going 11-of-23 - as the team finished 18-of-31 (58.1 percent), compared to Minnesota's 12-of-14 (85.7 percent).
Mitchell Wilbekin sank a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 10 points, while Codi Miller-McIntyre made 4-of-9 shots and also scored in double figures.
After a back-and-forth opening half, Minnesota made its first seven shots of the second half, including four 3-pointers, to take a 48-34 advantage it never relented.
Miller-McIntyre hit back-to-back layups during a 5-0 run in which the Deacons cut the margin to 68-56, but Minnesota scored seven straight points and didn't allow the Deacons within 15 the rest of the way.
Devin Thomas had a game-high eight rebounds, while Konstantinos Mitoglou chipped in nine points for Wake Forest.
The first half featured each team taking a number of runs. An early 11-0 run gave Minnesota a 13-4 advantage, but the Deacons responded with a 9-2 spurt to cut the margin to 15-14.
Minutes later, Wake Forest answered a 7-0 Golden Gopher burst with a 6-0 run, before Minnesota went on another 8-0 run to make the score 32-22.
Aaron Rountree scored five points as the Demon Deacons scored nine straight points to close the half, cutting the halftime margin to 32-31.
Minnesota's Andre Hollins led all scorers with 27 points, making 7-of-10 3-pointers, also pulling down seven rebounds.
Carlos Morris (15 points), Joey King (14) and Maurice Walker (10) also scored in double figures for the Golden Gophers.
Wake Forest's bench out-produced Minnesota's by a 38-12 margin, and the Demon Deacons also outscored the Gophers 18-8 on the fast break.
OVERTON'S STRONG GAME
Miles Overton came into the game averaging less than 10 minutes per contest and shooting 28.6 percent.
He scored more than five points for the first time this year, leading the Deacons with 14 points in 21 minutes.
He sank seven free throws, more than double his previous career-high of three.
WILBEKIN FROM DEEP
Mitchell Wilbekin is continuing to shoot better than 40 percent from long range, as he hit 3-of-7 against Minnesota.
He has made 50 percent over the last five games, sinking 12-of-24 over that span.
HIGH-PRESSURE DEFENSE
Wake Forest forced 20 turnovers, thanks largely to 13 steals.
Aaron Rountree III led the way with three steals, while Overton, Madison Jones and Devin Thomas had two apiece.

Wake Forest opens the ACC portion of the schedule, traveling to NC State on Dec. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. game on ESPNU.
