WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest Demon Deacons beat American 77-64 on Sunday at the LJVM Coliseum. Senior Dearica Hamby led all players with 24 points.
Wake Forest (8-5) trailed 6-0 after the first three minutes of play but quickly rallied back to take the lead just three minutes later. The Demon Deacons never trailed again en route to the 77-64 victory.
Hamby scored 24 points with eight rebounds and four assists. Kelila Atkinson added 12 points and three assists and Ataijah Taylor chipped in with nine points and three steals. Millesa Calicott led the team with five assists.
American stormed out to a 6-0 lead with 16:52 on the clock. After a quick timeout the Deacs responded with a 6-2 run to tie the game 8-8. Amber Campbell made two free throws to give Wake Forest a 10-8 lead with 13:28 to play in the opening half. The Eagles briefly tied the game 10-10, before Wake Forest pulled away with an 18-7 run to open up a 28-17 lead. The Demon Deacons led 44-28 at halftime.
The Eagles cut the lead to single digits midway through the second half, 55-47 on a Michelle Holmes jumper. A Nicole Floyd three-pointer gave Wake Forest a 62-50 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.
With 3:57 to play, American was once again within eight points. Hamby scored back-to-back layups to push the lead to 70-58 with 3:29 remaining and the Demon Deacons rolled to the 77-64 win.
The Demon Deacons went 22-of-25 from the free-throw line in the game.
NOTES:
Dearica Hamby led all players with 24 points. It was her eighth 20-point game of the season.
Wake Forest went 22-of-25 from the free-throw line in the game.
Millesa Calicott led the team in assists for the seventh time in her career.
Kelila Atkinson scored 12 points including 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
UP NEXT:
Wake Forest will wrap up non-conference play with a home game against Western Carolina.
Western Carolina will come to LJVM Coliseum on Dec. 31 for a 3:30 p.m. start.
It will be the second contest in a Wake Forest double header. The men's basketball team will host Princeton at 1 p.m.
Wake Forest leads the series with Western Carolina 12-9.
The Demon Deacons are 6-2 against WCU at home.
