Aaron Fossas: Baseball
Why did you choose Wake Forest?
I chose Wake Forest because of the unique academic and athletic opportunity that is offered to student-athletes here. There is almost nowhere else in the country that is as elite at both academics and athletics as Wake Forest.
What do you love most about baseball?
I love the competitiveness that comes from standing on the mound in a key situation and trying to beat the batter while he tries to beat me. That one on one battle is what I love most about the game.
What are you most looking forward to this season?
I am most looking forward to joining the field hockey team in bringing another ACC Championship back to Wake Forest.
What do you like about playing at home?
Our facilities here at Wake Forest are as good, and are becoming better, than any team in the ACC. I came from playing on fields with no fences in Massachusetts high school baseball, so I guess the better question would be what don't I like about playing at home? Also, the support we receive from the University and the community makes playing at home an advantage for our team.
What degree(s) are you pursuing and what are you looking to do after school?
I am majoring in Communication and minoring in Spanish. After school, my hope is to continue playing baseball if the opportunity presents itself. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to play professional baseball.
What's your favorite thing about Tom Walter as a coach?
Coach Walt can best be described as a player's coach. He is somebody that everybody in the locker room wants to play for and he is willing to go above and beyond for his players. He takes an interest in your life not just on the baseball field, but off of it as well. The example he sets for us is my favorite thing about him as a coach.
What is your favorite restaurant in Winston-Salem?
My favorite restaurant would definitely be Putters Patio and Grill. Putters is a team favorite. I get the buffalo chicken tenders with buffalo chips every time I go (with extra ranch), unless I'm treating myself to a steak.
Which do you prefer, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram?
Well, since I don't have an Instagram it comes down to Facebook and Twitter. I like Facebook in that it helps me keep in touch with friends and family better, but I would have to say that I'm a Twitter guy. Most of my social media time is spent on Twitter. You can follow me at @aaronfossas (Sorry for the personal plug, but I could use the followers).
Pregame superstitions?
I never cut my nails on days I pitch. I squat down and touch the ground before I walk out to the mound at the start of each inning. I never touch the foul lines and I always jump over the first/third base paths when entering or leaving the field. These are more of a routine to me rather than superstitions. I also say a prayer before every inning that I pitch in which I thank Jesus for the opportunity to play baseball and the grace that He has given me and I pray that He would be glorified no matter how I do.
Best place to go on vacation and why?
My favorite vacations growing up always included visiting my family in South Florida and going to the beach. I love the sun and the water, so anywhere that has those two things I would enjoy.
If you couldn't play baseball, what other sport would you play?
If I couldn't play baseball I would probably be playing hockey. Hockey is a much bigger deal in New England than it is down here. I grew up playing both baseball and hockey and made the decision to focus primarily on baseball when I got older. If I couldn't play baseball I probably would have stuck with hockey.
