
Wake Forest Falls to UNCG in Extra Innings

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest fell to UNCG on Tuesday in extra innings by a score of 11-10 in a back-and-forth game.
Wake Forest (5-4, 0-0 ACC) had a two-run rally in the top of the ninth inning to go ahead 10-9 but UNCG rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth and won on a walk-off home run.
Charlie Morgan led Wake Forest with three RBI as he went 2-for-5 at the plate. Kevin Conway and Grant Shambley each had two RBI as Shambley went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Nate Mondou and Evan Stephens each had a run batted in while Jimmy Redovian went 3-for-4 offensively.
Wake Forest racked up 14 hits in the game but fell in a wild game. UNCG scored first as the Spartans added four runs in the bottom of the third inning off starter Matt Pirro. The first and third runs scored off wild pitches while the second run was scored off a sacrifice fly. A fourth run crossed after an error.
Wake Forest put up two as Evan Stephens started the inning off with a double to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Morgan doubled to right field to score Stephens for the Deacs' first run of the game. Matt Conway singled after Morgan followed by Mondou who singled to center, scoring Morgan to make it a 4-2 game.
UNCG added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 7-2. With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, Morgan walked to bring in a run for his second RBI of the game. A wild pitch two batters later scored Jonathan Pryor to make it a 7-4 game.
The Spartans scratched out a run in the bottom of the fifth to push its lead to 8-4. Wake Forest loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning but the left fielder for UNCG made a diving play to end the inning and preserve the four run lead.
Still trailing 8-4 in the top of the 8th inning, Wake Forest put up four runs in the top of the frame. Ben Breazeale doubled to begin the inning which was followed by a walk from Redovian. Shambley singled to score the first run of the inning to put runners on the corners. Stephens moved Redovian over on a bunt which was followed by Keniry getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Morgan then singled to right field to bring home a run to make it 8-6.
Kevin Conway pinch hit and doubled to left field scoring two runs to then tie the game at 8-8. UNCG followed up Wake Forest's offensive inning and scored one run in the bottom of the eighth off a fielder's choice to go up 9-8.
The Deacs once again rallied in the top of the ninth inning as Breazeale walked followed by Redovian who singled up the middle. Shambley then singled to center, scoring the tying run. Stephens followed with a sacrifice fly to put Wake Forest up 10-9.
UNCG scored a run off a bases loaded walk in the ninth inning to tie the game at 10-10 but Aaron Fossas got out of bases loaded, no out situation to force the game to extra innings.
The Spartans closed out the game in the 10th on a walk-off home run from Hunter King. Fossas took the loss in the game and moves to 2-1 on the season.
John McCarren pitched two innings in the game for the Deacs and gave up one unearned run with a strikeout. Garrett Kelly and Connor Johnstone each pitched an inning and gave up no hits or walks. Johnstone made his collegiate debut in the game.
UNCG (2-4) was led by King who had three RBIs while Tyler Frazier earned the win.
Wake Forest hosts Stony Brook on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by games with Saint Louis and Saint Peter's this weekend at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
