WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Kasey Gardiner rallied for a three set win in the deciding match as Wake Forest slipped by No. 44 VCU 4-3 on Saturday in Richmond, Va.
After losing the first set to Salome Kvitashvili at the No. 5 singles position, Gardiner fought back to win 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, keeping the Demon Deacons undefeated this season at 6-0.
The Deacons won the doubles point but faced a battle in singles. VCU picked up quick wins at the top two singles positions to go in front 2-1. But Samantha Asch evened the score at 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Daria Yakauleva at No. 3 and Luisa Fernandez put the Deacons in front once again, beating Ludivine Burguiere 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4
Olga Barscheuskaya then tied the match for VCU with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Xue Zhang at the No. 6 spot, leaving Gardiner's match at No. 5 as the deciding one.
The Demon Deacons continued their strong doubles play, getting wins at the top two positions to take the doubles point. They have won the doubles point in all six matches this season.
At No. 1, Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang blasted Yukako Noi and Burguiere 8-2, and Asch and Fernandez remained unbeaten in the dual match season at No. 2, beating Cindy Chala and Yakauleva 8-6 in the deciding match.
Wake Forest's run of perfect doubles in dual matches was spoiled at No. 3 as Kvitashvili and Olga Terteac edged Guerin and Andrea Retolaza 8-7 (4). The Deacs are now 19-1 in doubles this spring.
The Demon Deacons will take on another ranked foe on the road tomorrow as they travel to No. 43 William & Mary for a noon match.
