GREENSBORO, N.C. - No. 13 seed Wake Forest will open the 2014 ACC Women's Tennis Championship against No. 12 seed Maryland on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The Demon Deacons (11-12, 3-11 ACC) will be looking to avenge a 4-3 loss against the Terrapins (8-12, 4-10 ACC) on April 12. Should Wake Forest come away with a victory, the match would serve as the ACC finale for Maryland, who will join the Big 10 beginning in the 2014-15 season.
In the first match with the Terps, Wake Forest fell behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point, but rallied to tie the match at 3-3 after singles victories by Luisa Fernandez, Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang. Maryland clinched the match with a win by Nataliya Bredikhina at the No. 2 singles position.
That match, at four hours and seven minutes, was also the second-longest of the season for the Demon Deacons, topped only by a four-hour, 22-minute marathon against Winthrop on March 15.
Wake Forest will be seeking its first ACC Championship victory since a 4-2 upset of NC State on April 22, 2010. Last season, the Deacs dropped a 4-1 decision to Florida State in the opening round as Gardiner posted the lone point for the squad.
