CARY, N.C. - No. 40 Virginia Tech rallied in singles after losing the doubles point to defeat No. 31 Wake Forest 4-2 in the first round of the ACC Championship on Thursday at Cary Tennis Park.

Wake Forest earned early breaks at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to cruise through the doubles point. At the No. 2 position, Romain Bogaerts and Maksim Kan downed Joao Monteiro and Hunter Koontz 8-4. Adam Lee and Anthony Delcore clinched the point at No. 3, breaking in the final game to down Jai Corbett and Nick Wilson 8-4 to put Wake Forest in front 1-0.

Momentum quickly swung in the Hokies' favor in singles. At No. 3 Monteiro raced to a 6-0 first set against Jon Ho at No. 3 en route to a 6-0, 6-3 victory that evened the overall score at 1-1.

Koontz followed for Virginia Tech, beating No. 104 Kan 6-4, 6-2 to give the Hokies their first lead. No. 24 Amerigo Contini made the score 3-1, rallying to take down No. 28 Bogaerts 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.

The Deacons made a late comeback attempt as Aws Laaribi defeated Jai Corbett 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 and Pedro Dumont raced to a lead in the third set at No. 6. But No. 121 Andreas Bjerrehus killed Wake Forest's hopes, finishing off Lee 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the 4-2 win.

At the time the match was finished, Dumont led 5-2, 30-0 in the final set at No. 6.

Wake Forest will await the selections for the NCAA Championship, which will be announced next Tuesday.
