WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team announced its 2014-15 non-conference schedule on Thursday highlighted by a trip to the Cancun Challenge in November.
The Demon Deacons will host nine non-conference games at The Coliseum and has just two true road games before ACC play.
The season opens with four games at home. The first of which is against Longwood in the season-opener on Saturday, Nov. 15. Wake then hosts Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 18. That will be the first meeting with the Golden Eagles since the teams split a home-and-home series in 1996 and 1997.
The first of two double-headers with the men's basketball team will be on Friday, Nov. 21, when the women take on BIG EAST foe Marquette. Last season, the Deacons fell to Marquette in the season-opener for both teams in Milwaukee. The Wake Forest men's team will take on Iona following the women's game. Both of those games are part of a weekend that will also see the Wake Forest football team take on rival Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Two days later, the Deacs will make it three-straight against the Eagles as they host the Coppin State Eagles on Sunday, Nov. 23. Wake has won all seven meetings with Coppin State.
The highlight of the non-conference schedule is a trip to Cancun over Thanksgiving for the Cancun Challenge. In their first appearance in the tropical destination, the Deacs will face a strong field as all three teams went to the postseason a year ago. Princeton, Charlotte and Montana all participated in the WNIT last season. The Lady Grizzles advanced to the finals of the Big Sky Championship and finished the 2013-14 season with a 23-11 record.
Wake's first true road test of the season will come on Dec. 3, when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The last trip up north to face the Wolverines was not a pleasant one for the Deacs as Michigan claimed a 91-58 victory in the 2010 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Deacons return home to face Pac 12 foe Arizona on Sunday, Dec. 7. Wake went to Arizona last season and won its first road game against a Pac 12 opponent, knocking-off the Wildcats 70-58.
Another road trip, this time to Richmond, is followed by four more home games to wrap the non-conference portion of the schedule.
The Deacs will head to Richmond for the first time since 2009. The Spiders have won each of the last four meetings between the two squads. A home game on Thursday, Dec. 18 against Towson will be followed two days later by another home contest against SEC foe Missouri. The game against the Tigers on Saturday, Dec. 20 will be the first game between the two schools.
The Deacons will have another first-time meeting with American on Sunday, Dec. 28 at The Coliseum. That game will be followed by the second double-header with the men's team. The New Year's Eve tilt with Western Carolina will come after the men's squad takes on Princeton. The Deacons and Catamounts have played 21 times but not since the 2007-08 season.
