LAWRENCE, Kan. - Defensive miscues proved to be costly, as No. 24 Wake Forest women's soccer fell 4-1 to Kansas at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Jayhawks (4-0) scored the first three goals of the contest. Ali Kimura scored the first and third goals, the first on a breakaway in which she beat keeper Lindsay Preston one-on-one, and the third in which she tapped in a cross far post.
Early in the second half, Liana Salazar scored the first of her two goals when a KU attacker went down in the box. Salazar executed the penalty kick, making it 3-0.
For the Demon Deacons (1-2), Riley Ridgik scored her first goal of the season, the 15th of her career, when her low-line drive shot on a free kick beat the keeper far post from 25 yards out.
Though the Deacs were the aggressors in the final third of the game, Kansas closed it out by scoring on another defensive breakdown, as both Salazar and Kimura found their way behind the defense, and Salazar beat Preston two-on-one to make it 4-1 with less than a minute remaining.
Wake Forest again held the advantage in shots, this time by a 12-11 margin, including 9-4 in the second half.
