WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The men's tennis season is set to get underway this weekend, head coach Tony Bresky announced, and the 2014-15 schedule also features dual matches against 15 NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a year ago.
"We are excited about this year's schedule and anticipate it will provide our guys with ample opportunity and challenges," Bresky said. "The fall schedule includes several great college events in addition to quite a few Futures and Challengers. In the spring, our out of conference matches will get us ready for ACC play which leads into the ACC and NCAA tournaments. I know the guys are motivated and ready to start competing."
Beginning with the Duke Fab Four Invitational this weekend, the Demon Deacons will compete in a total of 13 fall events, including a few split-squad weekends. The fall slate is highlighted by the Wake Forest Fall Invitational from Oct. 10-12.
The three-month fall season also includes the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma (Sept. 27-Oct. 6), the ITA Carolina Regionals in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, (Oct. 16-20) and the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York (Nov. 6-9).
Of the 15 ranked programs the Deacs will take on during the spring season, six are nonconference opponents. Beginning with a Jan. 17 doubleheader against Charlotte and 2014 NCAA qualifier East Tennessee State, Wake Forest will play 15 of its 23 dual matches on home court.
The next opponent to come to Winston-Salem in the spring is 2014 NCAA runner-up Oklahoma, which lost to USC in the national championship. The Sooners will take on the Deacs on Jan. 30.
Wake Forest will also take on NCAA qualifiers Tennessee (Feb. 8) and Oklahoma State (Feb. 21) at home, and travel to South Carolina (Feb. 6) and Texas (March 1).
The ACC portion of the schedule begins March 6 with Virginia. After a nonconference match versus TCU, the Deacs will also welcome ACC foes Florida State (March 13), Louisville (March 15) and Virginia Tech (March 20) to campus.
After four straight road conference matches at Duke (March 22), NC State (March 28), Georgia Tech (April 3) and Clemson (April 5), the Deacs return home to take on Miami (April 10), followed by a home-finale doubleheader against North Carolina and The Citadel (April 12).
Wake Forest closes the regular season at Notre Dame and Boston College before competing in the ACC Tournament (April 23-26).
