
Upsets Highlight Day Two of Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - No. 1 doubles duo of Luisa Fernandez and Kasey Gardiner upset Maryland's ITA No. 55-ranked doubles team of Welma Luus and Nataliya Bredikhina 8-2 to highlight the Wake Forest women's tennis team's second day at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational on Saturday at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
The Deacs swept the Terrapins in all four doubles matches Saturday to finish a perfect 4-0 for the day. Wake Forest also faced the Indiana in singles play winning four of seven singles matches. The Hoosiers finished No. 51 in the ITA team rankings last season in 2013-14.
In addition to Fernandez and Gardiner's performance in doubles, the Deacs took the three other doubles matches against Maryland. Samantha Asch and Kimmy Guerin defeated Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan 8-5, Courtney Meredith and Xue Zhang took their match 8-5 against Olivia Gaudreault and Ekaterina Tour, and Karen Forman and Sara Swift defeated Cassandre Thebault and Olga Bredikhina 8-6.
In singles play, Wake Forest took four matches against the Hoosiers. Guerin defeated Paula Gutierrez 6-4, 6-0 to go a perfect 2-0 for the day in singles and doubles. Asch beat Kim Schmider 6-3, 6-4 in her singles match. The freshmen also performed well for the day as both went 2-0 in singles and doubles. Meredith took her match against Sarah Baron 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, and Swift defeated Mary Beth King 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
The Demon Deacons return to action tomorrow to wrap up the Tribe Invitational on Sunday with singles matches against VCU and Virginia.
