
Wake Forest Falls to Virginia, 3-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Wake Forest volleyball team fell in its second ACC match of the season to the Virginia Cavaliers 3-1 on Saturday night in Memorial Gymnasium.
Wake Forest falls to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the ACC with the loss, while Virginia improves to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Jazmen Russell and Matalee Reed each had a team-high 17 kills to lead the Deacs. Tori Janowski led the way with a match-high 19 kills for the Cavaliers.
"I was proud with the way our team started off the match after an emotional victory against Virginia Tech", said Wake Forest head coach Ken Murczek. "After dominating the first set and keeping it close in the second, losing the second was crucial to the momentum. Despite our great effort, Virginia played much better the rest of the match. I am excited to see how much our team continues to grow throughout the coming weeks in conference play".
The set started tight early, but the Deacs began to create some breathing room with a 7-4 lead to begin the set. Wake Forest then extended its lead again 13-7 after a service ace from Caroline Wolf.
A kill from Matalee Reed and an attack error by Virginia got the Demon Deacon to their largest lead of the set 20-10. With the Deacs holding set point 24-15, the Cavaliers went on a 4-0 run to make it 24-19, but Kylie Long's kill closed out the set 25-19.
The second set began almost the same as the first with Wake Forest jumping out to an early 7-3 advantage. Virginia responded with a 6-2 run to tie the set 9-9 after a kill from Janowski. Wake Forest retook the lead 10-9 after a kill from Ashlee Rusk, but the Cavaliers took their first lead of the game 12-10 following back-to-back kills from Janowski.
Wake Forest wouldn't see the lead again in the set as Virginia closed out the set 25-19 to tie the match 1-1 heading into the 10-minute intermission.
The Cavaliers got off to a hot start in the third with a 6-3 start forcing the Deacs to call timeout. Wake Forest would have to call its second timeout midway through the set trailing 14-9. The hitting percentage of .194 and six errors doomed the Demon Deacons as Virginia claimed a 2-1 lead in the match closing out the set 25-18.
The Demon Deacons the early lead in the fourth 7-5 after a kill from Wolf. Virginia responded and took a 14-11 lead forcing a timeout to be called by Wake Forest. The Deacs battled back to tie the set 19-19, but their comeback fell short as the Cavaliers closed out the match winning the fourth set 25-20.
NOTES
It was the first time this season the Reed had over 15 kills in a match as she recorded 17 tonight.
After hitting above .300 in the first two sets, the Deacs dropped to .194 in the third and .257 in the fourth.
With Virginia hitting .383 for the match, it is only the second opponent that the Deacs have faced this year that has hit above .300. The last team was Oklahoma who hit .394 on Sept. 18.
This is the 13th time that Russell has had a team-high in kills for a match this season.
Jazmen Russell finished with double-digit kills for the 14th time in 16 games this season.
The match was the 44th all-time meeting between the two ACC opponents.
ON DECK
The Demon Deacons return home to Reynolds Gym on Friday, Oct. 3, to face the North Carolina State Wolfpack at 6:30 p.m. Wake Forest completes the weekend with a road trip to Georgia Tech to take on the Yellow Jackets on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
