
Deacons Go-Low On Day 1 of Primland Collegiate

MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. - It was a sea of red on Monday for the Wake Forest men's golf team. The Demon Deacons shot rounds of 275-274 and lead the first Primland Collegiate Invitational at 27-under par.
Wake Forest, hosting its first event since 1986, shot its two lowest rounds since the school-record 15-under 269 in the second round of the VCU Shootout in 2008. The Deacons lead Auburn by three shots headed into Tuesday's final round.
Individually for the Deacs, freshman Paul McBride, who is playing as an individual, shot rounds of 68-67 and is in third place at 9-under par. McBride made 10 birdies, an eagle and just three bogeys in the 36 holes.
Right behind him is sophomore Danny Guise who opened the day with a career-best 6-under 66 and followed it with a 2-under 70 to sit in a tie for fourth at 4-under par. Guise was second in the field on Monday with 12 birdies.
Junior Andrew Winters continued his solid start to the year with rounds of 69-68 and is tied for fifth. For Winters has not shot three sub-70 rounds in a row this season. Fellow junior Davis Womble joins Winters at 7-under par as he followed an opening 71 with a career-best 6-under 66. Womble is coming-off the best tournament of his career in which he finished tied for fourth at 7-under par.
Freshman Will Zalatoris is the fifth Demon Deacon in the top-8 as he posted rounds of 68-70 to sit in a tie for eighth at 6-under par. Senior Cyrus Stewart (73-68) and Tanner Owen (70-72) are also under-par through 36 holes, giving head coach Jerry Haas all five of his players in the scoring lineup under-par.
Clancy Waugh shot rounds of 71-73 and is in a tie for 30th while Woody Woodward posted scores of 73-75 and Brandon NG checked-in with rounds of 76-80.
The Demon Deacons are looking for their first tournament victory since the Wexford Intercollegiate in 2010. Wake Forest starts the final round at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday morning and is paired with Auburn.
