MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. - On a beautiful day at the Highlands Course at the Primland Resort, the Wake Forest men's golf team made enough birdies to outlast the field and win the first Primland Collegiate Invitational.

The Demon Deacons fired three rounds of 275-274-277 to finish at 38-under par, one shot ahead of Auburn. The 38-under par total of 826 is the second-lowest 54-hole tournament score in school history, one shot off the school-record of 39-under par which was set at the Chris Schenkel Invitational in the spring of 1986.

The win was also the first for the team since winning the 2010 Wexford Intercollegiate.

All five members of the scoring squad finished under-par and the Deacons made a total of 69 birdies over the two days.

Junior Davis Womble continued his hot start to the year as he fired a final round 4-under 68 and finished tied for third at 11-under par. That bested his previous career-low 54-hole score of 7-under which he shot in the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic earlier this month. Womble has carded six-straight under-par rounds to start the year and leads the team with a 69.0 scoring average.

Freshman Paul McBride, who played as an individual this week, tied Womble as the low Demon Deacon. He fired rounds of 68-67 on Monday and then carded a 2-under 70 in the final round on Tuesday to finish in third place at 11-under par. For the week, he made 13 birdies and two eagles. McBride and Womble posted the lowest individual finish for a Demon Deacon since Brendan Gielow finished at 12-under par at the VCU Shootout in 2008.

Sophomore Danny Guise capped the best tournament of his young career with seven birdies en route to a final round 70. Guise finished the tournament with a field-best tying 19 birdies and finished tied for seventh at 10-under par. In the opening round, he posted the lowest round of his career, a 6-under 66.

Like Guise, freshman Will Zalatoris posted back-to-back rounds of 2-under par 70 to finish the event. Those rounds followed a 4-under 68 on Monday morning and the US Junior Amateur Championship finished tied for 12th at 8-under par. Zalatoris has finished each of his first two collegiate events under par.

Fellow freshman Tanner Owen got off to a tremendous start on Tuesday, going 5-under in his first six holes. He cooled a bit but still helped the Deacons to victory with a 3-under 69. That tied his low round of the year and he finished in a tie for 18th at 5-under par.

Senior Cyrus Stewart rounded-out the Deacon five as he finished at 4-under par after a final round 71. Junior Andrew Winters also finished at 4-under par and tied for 21st as he followed rounds of 69-68 with a final round 75.

Sophomore Woody Woodward carded a final round 75 as well and as he finished in a tie for 42nd at 7-over par. Fellow sophomore Clancy Waugh was 5-over and tied for 40th while Brandon NG finished-up with a final round 79.

North Carolina's Williams Register opened the tournament with a 66 on Monday morning and continued his solid playing over the final 36 holes, winning the tournament at 17-under par. He carded rounds of 66-65-68.

The Demon Deacons will look to keep rolling in a couple of weeks at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn. The first round gets underway on Friday, Oct. 10.
