
Greensfelder's OT Goal Lifts Wake Forest over UConn

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - - Ricky Greensfelder scored just three minutes into the first overtime period as No. 23 Wake Forest defeated No. 21 Connecticut 2-1 at Spry Stadium.
Wake Forest (1-2-0) went down 1-0 early in the first half but the Demon Deacons responded with two goals to down Connecticut (1-2-0). Jared Odenbeck scored in the first half while Greensfelder tallied his first of the season in overtime. Michael Gamble assisted on each tally.
UConn struck first in the game as Cyle Larin scored in the fourth minute after he finished a pass from Ethan Vanacore-Decker. After UConn took a 1-0 lead, Wake Forest had several chances including a header from Michael Gamble in the sixth minute that just went high.
After several offensive chances, the Deacons tied the game up late in the first half. Wake Forest scored the equalizing goal in the 36th minute after Odenbeck finished a free kick from Gamble to even the game at 1-1. The Deacs fired off 10 shots in the first half as Alec Ferrell made two saves.
The second half was back-and-forth between the two teams that included yellow cards for each squad. Wake Forest had a corner kick in the last minute of regulation but the UConn defense blocked a shot from Jon Bakero as the two teams headed to overtime.
Ferrell made one stop in overtime then just 2:43 into the extra period, Greensfelder netted a pass from Gamble for the game-winner.
Notes
- Odenbeck scored his first career goal with Wake Forest after spending one season with Georgetown.
- Ferrell made six saves in the game, one short of his career high.
- Greensfelder's only other career goal was a game-winner to defeat Navy in the NCAA Tournament last season.
- Wake Forest outshot UConn 17-12 in the game.
- Wake Forest has never lost to Connecticut as the Deacs hold a 5-0-1 advantage in the series.
- Gamble recorded two assists in a game for the second time in his career.
