SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team snapped a five-match losing skid Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 (29-27, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22) win on the road against Notre Dame. The triumph improved the Demon Deacons' record to 10-10 with a 2-6 mark in the ACC. It was their third-straight victory against the Fighting Irish.
Sophomore Caroline Wolf racked up a career-best 42 digs on the day to help hold the Irish to a .125 hitting percentage. Wolf has now totaled 879 digs in her second season in Old Gold and Black, slotting her 15th in program history.
The Naperville, Ill. native's previous career high for digs was 29 on Sept. 20, 2014 against Western Carolina. She had 28 in a five-set win over UND later in 2014.
Notre Dame got out to a fast start in the opening set, claiming the match's first four points before the Deacons stormed back to knot the score at six. The remainder of the set played evenly, especially late. The Deacs survived a 24-23 set point and finished off a 29-27 win after the Irish fended off three set points.
In the second set, Wake Forest came out strong to gain a 7-1 advantage. The Demon Deacons led by as many as eight, but were forced to call a timeout after the home team cut its deficit to four at 20-16. From there, however, the Deacs reeled off four straight points and went on to win, 25-17.
Both teams struggled to maintain serve following intermission, as the Deacons became the first team to gain a two-point edge at 11-9. The Fighting Irish quickly got back out in front, 14-13, and later went on a 9-4 win to win the set, 25-19.
Looking to rebound from a third-set loss, Wake Forest opened the fourth frame with an 8-4 lead and went on to add to its cushion, eventually earning a 21-15 edge. Notre Dame rallied to cut its deficit to 24-22, but Hanna Lee notched a game-ending kill to seal the win.
Offensively, the Deacs were led by Kylie Long's 19 kills. Matalee Reed also chipped in 13 kills and three service aces. Sophia Dodd posted a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs, while fellow setter Rachel Burau helped create 28 kills.
Play resumes for Wake Forest next week when it hosts Virginia Tech Friday at 6 p.m. and Pittsburgh Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Demon Deacons then wrap up a three-match homestand the following Wednesday against Duke.
