CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 6-ranked Clemson controlled the first 60 minutes of the game en route to a 2-0 victory over Wake Forest at Historic Riggs Field on Friday night.
The Demon Deacons (4-6-2, 1-3 ACC) came to life in the final half hour, out-shooting the Tigers (9-1-1, 3-1 ACC), 6-0, in that span.
For Clemson, a pair of highlight-reel goals proved to be the difference. Catrina Atanda was left open in the middle of the pitch and scored top shelf from close to 30 yards in the 18th minute.
In the 58th minute, Samantha Staab took a long free kick, finding the head of Jenna Weston who finished far post to make it 2-0.
Wake Forest's best chance came in the 84th minute. Pilar Torres dribbled behind the defense, but keeper Kailen Sheridan cut off her angle and made the 1v1 save. The rebound went to the Deacs and Bayley Feist also got off a header, which was again saved.
Sheridan made four saves in Clemson's shutout victory. Lindsay Preston and Nonie Frishette each allowed a goal; Preston made two saves and Frishette made one.
Feist led the offense with three shots off the bench, two of them on frame.
Wake Forest out-shot Clemson 6-3 in the second half, but the Tigers still had a 12-7 advantage overall.
The two-goal loss was Wake Forest's first by more than one goal this season.
The Deacs look to snap their four-game skid on Sunday, taking on Florida Gulf Coast on Mercer's campus in Macon, Ga.
