Wake Forest Opens ITA Carolina Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Xue Zhang of Wake Forest women's tennis advanced into the main draw of the ITA Carolina Regionals while two doubles duos got off to a quick start in the tournament in reaching the Round of 16 Thursday.
Zhang, one of the seeded players in the qualifying draw, topped Taylor Zaytoun of NC State 6-3, 6-1 before battling from behind to top Elon's Taylor Casey 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the main draw. In the first round on Friday, Zhang will battle Chloe Ouellet-Pizer of North Carolina.
With the start of the doubles draw, the duos of Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza Andrade and third-seeded Kimmy Guerin and Kasey Gardiner both won contests Thursday to advance to the Round of 16. Fernandez and Retolaza Andrade beat Natalia Janowicz and Olivia Lucas of Elon by the score of 6-4 before beating Tyler Baker and Macy Vonderschmidt of Charlotte 8-4 in the Round of 32. Guerin and Gardiner received a bye through the first round before topping Ana Ortiz and Ewa Telenga of Campbell 8-4.
In other doubles action, Emma Davis and Anna Ulyashchenko won their first-round match 8-0 over Kamilla Beisenova and Maria Paraja of Elon but dropped an 8-4 match to Beatrice Capra and Ellyse Hamlin of Duke. Zhang and Samantha Asch dropped their first-round matchup against Marika Akkerman and Maggie Kane of North Carolina 8-2.
Wake Forest continues the singles and doubles main draws on Friday starting at 9 a.m.
