WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team fell, 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22), to Virginia Tech in ACC action Friday night at Reynolds Gymnasium. After falling behind by two sets, the Demon Deacons won the third set before dropping a tight fourth frame.
The loss dropped the Deacs to 10-11 on the season with a 2-7 mark in conference action.
Virginia Tech controlled the first two sets to put Wake Forest in a 2-0 hole coming out of intermission.
In the first set, the teams split the first two points, but the Hokies went on a four-point run and never looked back, leading by as many as seven points en route to a 25-20 victory to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hokies then led for the duration of the second set after starting out with a 4-1 edge. The Deacons closed the gap to 7-6, but the visitors notched 13 of the next 19 points to claim an eight-point lead. The Deacs fought back toward the end, but the Hokies ultimately prevailed, 25-17.
Out of the intermission, the Deacs seized the momentum with a 5-1 run to begin the third set. Virginia Tech rallied to knot the score at 10, but Wake Forest proceeded to score three points in a row to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Deacons staved off a late Hokie rally that closed their lead to one at 21-20 to go on to win, 25-22.
After the first three sets went without a single lead change and a total of three ties, the fourth set was a back-and-forth affair.
The Demon Deacons held leads of 3-0 and 15-12, but Virginia Tech was able to erase both deficits. Neither team was able to pull away until the end when the Hokies turned a 23-22 edge into a match-clinching set win with a Kennedy Bryan kill and a Wake Forest attack error.
The 25-22 fourth set had a total of 11 tie scores and five lead changes.
Kylie Long paced the Deacs on the night with 13 kills, while Sophia Dodd and Hanna Lee headed the team with three aces apiece. Dodd also led the Deacons with 15 assists and nine digs. Katie Moore registered four total blocks.
Wake Forest will resume play Saturday at 6:30 p.m. when it hosts Pittsburgh. The Demon Deacons will also play at home Wednesday evening against Duke.
