CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Anna Ulyashchenko has become the Wake Forest women's tennis player to reach the semifinals of the ITA Carolina Regionals since Sasha Kulikova in 2007, as she picked up two convincing victories on Saturday in the tournament to be one of the final four players standing at the tournament.
In both of her two matches Saturday, Ulyashchenko didn't lose a game in the first set. In the Round of 16, she topped Kathy Weymouth of Furman 6-0, 6-4 before beating Amanda Rebol of NC State 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. On Sunday, she will take on No. 1-seed Hayley Carter of North Carolina at 10:15 a.m. with a spot in the finals on the line.
Other singles action Saturday included Emma Davis topping No. 9-seed Brigit Folland of South Carolina 6-3, 6-2 before falling in the quarterfinals to UNC's Carter 6-4, 6-2. Carter also topped Wake Forest's Samantha Asch in the Round of 16 by the score of 6-1, 6-1.
With two players advancing to the quarterfinals in Ulyashchenko and Davis, they were the first Wake Forest players to reach the tournament's quarterfinals since Martina Pavelec made a run to the quarterfinals in 2010.
Wake Forest's doubles run ended Saturday with an 8-5 loss to second-seeded Jessie Aney and Kate Vialle of North Carolina.
