WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of in-state foe, Duke, Wednesday evening at Reynolds Gymnasium. The Blue Devils swept the two-match season series and won their sixth in a row in the teams' all-time series with the victory.
The Demon Deacons dropped to 10-13 on the year with a 2-9 mark in conference play, while Duke upped its 2015 ledger to 11-10 with a 6-5 record in league action.
The opening set had seven ties and three lead changes, but Wake Forest held a late lead of 18-15. From there, however, the Blue Devils caught fire with two-time All-American and 2013 ACC Player of the Year Emily Sklar at the service line. Duke finished the frame on a 10-1 run to win, 25-19.
The Blue Devils never trailed in the second set. Wake Forest overcame four separate early deficits to knot the score at seven, but a Maggie Deichmeister kill sparked a four-point run and gave Duke the lead for good. The Deacons trimmed their deficit to one on six occasions, but the visitors held on for a 25-21 win.
Out of the intermission, the teams battled through a back-and-forth third set in which neither team could pull away. The Demon Deacons earned a 20-16 advantage, but Duke cut their lead to one at 24-23. Hanna Lee then got Wake Forest on the board with a kill to give her team the set win.
In similar fashion to the second set, the Blue Devils never got behind in the fourth set. The teams were tied at eight, but Duke created separation with a 9-4 run en route to a 25-18 win to clinch the victory.
Kylie Long tied for a match high with 16 kills on the night, while Caroline Wolf led the Deacons with 17 digs. Lee tied her second-highest block total for the season with seven, while Matalee Reed added six blocks and three service aces.
Rachel Burau and Sophia Dodd split the primary setting duties, tallying 26 and 22 assists, respectively.
Wake Forest will resume play Friday at Virginia. The Deacs will travel to Clemson and Georgia Tech next weekend.
