Deacons Falter at North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team was defeated, 3-0, by defending ACC champion North Carolina at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C. Saturday night.
With the loss, the Demon Deacons dropped to 9-7 on the season with a 1-3 ledger in conference play. The Tar Heels improved to 6-7 and 3-1 in the league.
UNC led for the duration of the first set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead that expanded to 9-2. The Deacs trimmed their deficit to 10-5, but North Carolina pulled away with a 10-2 run that made the score 20-7. Wake Forest fought back toward the end, but a Taylor Fricano concluded a 25-12 win for the home team.
The Demon Deacons started out with a 3-1 lead at the beginning of the second set, but saw that quickly evaporate with a three-point UNC run. After a North Carolina service error tied the score at five, the Heels strung together a 9-1 run that made it 14-6.
From there, the Deacs were unable to narrow the gap to less than six points and UNC went up 2-0 entering intermission with a 25-13 win.
Wake Forest claimed the first point of the third set, but did not lead again after conceding a five-point run. The Demon Deacons went on to make the score 7-6, but an 11-2 run by North Carolina put the contest out of reach. The Tar Heels went on to triumph, 25-15.
Offensively, Brianna Lynch led the Deacs with six kills, four of which came in the third set. Matalee Reed and Kylie Long had five kills apiece, while Sophia Dodd had 14 assists. Caroline Wolf had six digs.
Next week Wake Forest returns home to face Miami and Florida State, wrapping up a stretch of 15-straight matches in the state of North Carolina. From there, the Demon Deacons will hit the road to play Louisville and Notre Dame.
