CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team was unable to complete a season sweep of Virginia, falling to the Cavaliers, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-20) on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Va. The Deacs topped UVA in five sets at home back on Sept. 26.
The Demon Deacons, who fell to 10-14 with a 2-10 ACC mark on the year, were outhit .330-.078 and were out-blocked, 12-3.
Virginia led for the duration of the opening set after opening the match with back-to-back kills and a Lauren Fuller service ace. The Deacs cut their deficit to one at 5-4, but with the score at 8-6, the Cavaliers went on an 8-2 run to pull away. The home team went on to win the set, 25-16. Despite falling in the frame, Kylie Long posted four kills on a .500 hitting percentage.
The Deacons took the first point of the second set to earn their first lead of the evening, but could not hold it. After UVA drew even at 3-3, it scored five-straight points and never looked back. Wake Forest was only able to trim its deficit to three points on two occasions as Virginia picked up another 25-16 set win and took a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
The third set saw Virginia stake itself to a 7-2 lead out of the gate that eventually increased to 20-12 later on. Wake Forest did not go down without a fight, battling back to make it a three-point contest at 23-20, but the Cavaliers capped the sweep on two Deacon miscues.
Long finished the match as the only Deac to hit double figures in kills with 10. Sophomore Caroline Wolf added 14 digs to add to her ACC-leading total in that category. She now has 409 digs on the year and 932 for her career, the 12th-most in program history.
Wake Forest is off until next Friday when it opens the month of November with a match at Clemson. The Demon Deacons will then take on Georgia Tech next Sunday before returning home on Nov. 13 to play Boston College.
