TULSA, Okla. -- Wake Forest men's tennis had two players successfully complete runs through pre-qualifying action at the Saint Francis Health Systems ITA All-American Championships on Monday by winning their way into the qualifying draw at the University of Tulsa.
Keivon Tabrizi and Maksim Kan both pulled out three-set victories, as Tabrizi topped Jordan Belga of Florida by the score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 while Kan beat Matt Mendez of Ohio State 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. The two players moved on to the qualifying draw, which started on Monday as well, to give the Demon Deacons five players in qualifying action.
In the draw, Christian Seraphim was the only Demon Deacon to pick up a win in the first round. The 6-8, redshirt-sophomore defeated qualifier Jordi Arconada of Texas A&M 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round on Tuesday. The four others players -- Kan, Tabrizi, No. 14-seed Jon Ho and Skander Mansouri -- all dropped their first-round matches and entered the consolation qualifying bracket.
After winning their way in qualifying, Kan dropped a 6-4, 6-4 contest to No. 17-24-seed Jolan Cailleau of Texas Tech while Tabrizi fell 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 against Stanford's Maciek Romanowicz. Mansouri, like Kan, dropped his match to a seeded player, falling 7-6 (5), 6-4 against No. 17-24 Fred Gelbrich of San Diego State. Ho's first-round match saw the senior lose 7-6, 6-2.
In the consolation qualifying bracket, Mansouri earned a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Louisville's Jeffrey Brown while Ho fell 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 to Ryan Peniston of Memphis. Tabrizi and Kan have yet to play in the consolation qualifying bracket. The two will complete their matches on Tuesday at 9 a.m. CT.
Seraphim's second-round qualifying matchup is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT. He will take on Michael Genender of Stanford. Should Seraphim win, his third-round matchup, the final round of qualifying, will be played later Tuesday with the winner earning a spot in the main draw.
In main draw action later this week, Romain Bogaerts was selected to play the main singles draw while Mansouri and Seraphim will play the main doubles draw. Sam Bloom and Anthony Delcore will also compete in the doubles qualifying draw.
