MACOMB, Ill. -- Wake Forest men's tennis head coach Tony Bresky was inducted into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday. He was joined by three other standout Leatherneck alumni being inducted.
Graduating in 1998 with a degree in business with a major in accounting, Bresky is still the all-time leader for victories. He played four years of tennis for the Leathernecks, earning Mid-Continent Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 1994 and garnering league player of the year accolades in each of the next three seasons. He led WIU to the program's first Mid-Continent Conference championship in 1995 and successfully defended the team title the following year. Bresky was a two-time ITA Scholastic All-American in 1996 and 1997 and was a three-year team captain.
"It's an honor to be selected to the WIU Hall of Fame," Bresky said. "I had a great experience during my time at WIU, was surrounded by quality teammates and coaches, and am grateful for the opportunity the university and Athletic department provided me."
Bresky holds the season records for singles victories (27) and combined victories (51) at WIU. His 89 career wins in singles play and 181 combined wins (singles and doubles) still rank first in the WIU record books.
Formerly an ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005 at Virginia, Bresky served as the head coach at Cornell in 2011 leading the Big Red to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth prior to coming to Wake Forest. Now in his fifth year with the Demon Deacons, he was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2013 and guided Wake Forest to a school-record 24 wins in 2015.
Bresky was joined as new inductees by Jennifer Hogan (volleyball), Mark Kaczmarek (football) and Justin Langan (men's soccer/football). The four were honored during halftime of WIU's football game Saturday, Oct. 3, against Southern Illinois.
To be considered for selection into the Western Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame, an individual must fall into one of the following areas and qualify as the criteria in that area describes. All candidates must have been nominated for consideration, and receive 100 percent support from the final selection committee.
