PORTLAND, Ore. – The Wake Forest men's golf team captured the title at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational Tuesday at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course. Playing against an elite field that included 11 teams that competed at last year's NCAA Championship, the Deacons led wire-to-wire, posting a score of 37-under par for three rounds.
Wake Forest followed a school-record 15-under par round on the opening day with consecutive rounds of 11-under par on Monday and Tuesday to win the event by three strokes over USC and Duke and by 11 shots over Stanford and Texas. The score of 37-under par is the third-best in program history for a 54-hole tournament.
"One of our goals with such a young team was to learn how to win at an early age," said head coach Jerry Haas. "I was impressed with our play the entire tournament, especially against such a strong field. I am so proud of the team and proud to be Demon Deacon."
Sophomore Paul McBride led the Demon Deacons with a T-5th place individual finish. He posted three consecutive rounds of 3-under to finish at 9-under.
Sophomore Will Zalatoris carded rounds of 69, 68 and 70 to finish T-11th at 8-under par. Senior Davis Womble finished T-14th with at 7-under after a final round 69 on Tuesday. Freshman Cameron Young posted a 5-under total of 210 to finish T-19th individually. Fellow newcomer Lee Detmer followed back-to-back rounds of par with a 3-under final round to finish T-28th.
It is the second victory for the Demon Deacons in three tournaments this season. They also won the Rod Myers Invitational last month at Duke University.
Wake Forest will return to action later this month at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, held Oct. 16-18 at The Golf Club of Georgia in suburban Atlanta.
