ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The fifth-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team is in third place after the first round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the Golf Club of Georgia. The Demon Deacons shot a 4-under round of 284 and are two shots off the lead at the event, which features seven of the top nine teams in the current Golfstat rankings.
Wake Forest trails Florida State by two shots and Virginia by one shot after the first 18 holes. Only six of the 17 teams shot under par during the first round.
Freshman Cameron Young led the Deacons with a first round 68 and is tied for second place individually at 4-under. Sophomores Paul McBride and Will Zalatoris are also in the top 10, each carding a 2-under round of 70 to finish T-7th. Rounding out the Demon Deacons' first round score was senior Davis Womble, who had a 4-over round of 76.
"This team really battled today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We knew late in the day we could maybe pick up some birdies, which we were able to do. It was very tough conditions with the wind and with being last off on some bumpy greens, but the guys handled themselves like pros. It was a nice way to start the event and nice work by Cameron to shoot 68. This tournament has an awesome field and we are off early tomorrow, so it will be a quick turnaround."
The tournament runs through Sunday in suburban Atlanta. The Demon Deacons are looking for their third victory of the season.
