
Six Deacons Advance to Semifinals at WFU Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Led by strong play from the freshman class, the Wake Forest women's tennis team put in a strong showing at a rain-affected Wake Forest Invitational on Friday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Highly touted freshmen Emma Davis and Joanna Zalewski, competing in the A Singles flight, are both through to the semifinals after picking up two wins on the first day of play. Davis defeated Elon's Olivia Lucas by a score of 6-1, 6-3, then advanced to defeat Alice Garcia of Winthrop in a three-setter, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. She will face Old Dominion's Nikol Hristova on Sunday.
Zalewski took two straight sets victories over Soumeya Anane of UNCG and Srna Stosljevic of UConn, with 6-2, 6-4 and 7-5, 6-2 scores respectively. She will face Lyn Yee Choo of ETSU in the semifinals on Sunday.
Adding to the impressive play of the Demon Deacon freshman class was Anna Ulyashchenko, who took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Emily Groeneveld of Liberty and a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Carol Sigaki of USC Upstate. The top seed in the B Singles bracket, UIyashchenko will match up against Winthrop's Mariana Humberg on Sunday morning in the semifinals.
Redshirt junior Samantha Asch also competed in the B Singles flight and reached the semifinals. She took the win against Ava Todd of Davidson by a 7-6(2), 6-4 score in the first round, then defeated Erica Braschi of Elon in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-2. She will face Belen Rivera of Liberty on Sunday for a chance to play in the finals of her bracket.
In the C Singles flight, Luisa Fernandez advanced to the semifinals on Sunday, and senior Xue Zhang claimed two victories to reach the semifinals in the D Singles flight.
The Deacons will begin doubles play tomorrow in the A and B flights, weather permitting. Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza will compete in the A flight, while freshmen Davis and Ulyashchenko will team up in the B flight.
