WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team erased a 2-1 deficit to claim a 3-2 win over Boston College in ACC action at Reynolds Gymnasium Friday night. The Demon Deacons, who entered the night with an identical record to the Eagles, are now 12-15 on the year with a 4-11 ledger in conference play.
Sophomore Caroline Wolf eclipsed the 1,000-career dig mark in the first set, finishing the match with 20. She now has now accumulated 1,018 digs, the ninth-most in program history.
The first set was evenly matched as both teams found success siding out. Neither team could gain a cushion of more than two points until with BC in the lead, 21-20, Julia Topor posted back-to-back aces to boost the Eagles to an eventual 25-21 set win.
The Deacons began the second frame with a sense of urgency and never trailed. Wake Forest claimed the first six points of the set and staved off a late Boston College rally to knot the match with a 25-23 win.
Out of the intermission, the teams looked like they were on track for another tight contest, but an 11-point Eagle run guided the visitors to a 25-10 win and a 2-1 overall lead. Boston College won 13 of the set's final 14 points.
As it did after dropping the first set, Wake Forest came out strong in the fourth set, staking itself to a 4-0 lead. This time, however, the Eagles stormed back to knot the score at six and went on to take a 17-15 lead. Following a timeout, the Deacs took control and went on a 7-1 lead to take a 22-18 lead en route to a 25-19 win. They finished the set on a 10-3 run.
The fifth stanza looked ominous for Wake Forest after BC jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Deacons, though, rallied quickly following a timeout. The Deacs strung together a 10-2 run that provided them the cushion they needed to go on to close out the set, 15-12. A Kylie Long kill capped the match.
The Deacons improved to 5-1 in five-set matches on the year. They have gone the distance in each of their last three matches.
Matalee Reed led the Deacs with 18 kills and added nine digs. Long was also solid in the match, posting 13 kills to up her season total to 359, the 20th-highest season total in school history.
Wolf is now up to 495 digs on the season and is on the verge of joining Trina Maso de Moya as the only Deacons to have multiple 500-dig seasons.
Wake Forest continues play Sunday when it plays host to Syracuse at 1 p.m. The team will travel to nationally-ranked Florida State and Miami next week.
