Wake Forest Head Coach Danny Manning
Opening Statement...
"Richmond came out tonight and they delivered the first blow. We were fighting and scrapping, we go into the half down two. We came back out in the second half and we made a run. They made a run, but they continued to execute their offense and we didn't do a good job of guarding. We gave up far too many baskets, whether it was types of cuts or passes they were going to throw, or knowing personnel. We have to do a better job of that. And then when you turn the ball over as many times as we did tonight, that's hard to overcome. We have to do a much better job at making our free throws when we get to the free throw line. We did some good things tonight, posting up strong and going after balls and getting to the free throw line. We have to reward ourselves by cashing those in. On the offensive glass, we had 12 offensive rebounds and we've got to do a good job cashing those in. We didn't have any fast break points in my eyes. We can't be that type of team. Give Richmond credit, but this is a game that was right there for our taking, and we didn't seize it."
On the lack of scoring at the end of the game...
"We obviously didn't execute well enough down the stretch of the game. We have to do a better job of trusting the offense. That's the type of defense that they play, they do a lot of switching and you can't stand there and just hold the ball. That's what the defense is designed to do. When you move the basketball, good things happen and areas open up in that zone. But we didn't move the basketball well enough."
On freshman Bryant Crawford's effort...
"We put a lot on his plate, there's no doubt about that. That's part of the reason that we got him. He's a freshman. He's going to do some really great things, and then he's going to do some things he needs to learn from. He needs to learn from his seven turnovers tonight and make sure we do a better job of taking care of the basketball. But he's a competitor, he's a fighter and he's only going to get better. We still know he's a freshman, but we expect a lot from him, and we're going to continue to coach him and try to make him better."
On freshman John Collins' night...
"The guys he's playing behind had a double-double. He's playing really, really well, no question about it. But I think those other guys are playing well too. I think he's got to continue to learn and grow, but we're very pleased with him and excited about him. We want it to continue. But Devin (Thomas) and Dinos (Mitoglou), those guys had another double-double tonight. It's not like the guys playing more minutes at his position aren't efficient and effective right now."
On Richmond's three-point shooting...
"We knew the guys that could shoot, the guys that were capable shooters. They threw a couple up late in the shot clock that went in, and that happens. We just didn't do a good enough job defensively. That's probably the biggest thing. You look at the stat sheet, and we do well in some categories. Obviously the 20 turnovers stand out, but we rebounded the ball fairly well. We shot it fairly well."
Richmond Head Coach Chris Mooney
Opening Statement...
"Well, I'm very proud of my team. I thought we responded through adversity in terms of foul trouble. We played a lot of guys and a lot of guys came up very big. I was proud of Trey Davis. He's a senior captain who had a tremendous game. Wake, without Miller-McIntyre, obviously is a huge challenge for them. Their rebounding and their size and their tremendous presence inside is a challenge, especially for our team."
On his team's rebounding in the second half...
"I thought we rebounded much better than we did in the first half. We didn't compete on the backboards well enough in the first half. Beginning in the second half, we really did rebound well. Down the stretch, we got stops. We got a couple blocked shots. We got a few loose balls and we didn't let them get any uncontested threes late. Even though I'm a little surprised our defense isn't in better shape, I do think down the stretch we played better defensively."
On his team's success thus far this season...
"We've always felt like we've had good offensive percentages, but we've never scored this much and we've certainly never given up nearly this much. I would take easy scoring if we could get it. We'll just have to see if we can get a little bit better defensively."
Wake Forest Senior Forward Devin Thomas
On where the game got away...
"We just did not get good shots and execute like we were supposed to. We had too many fast point breaks for them. We did not get in good positions at the end."
On the Maui Jim Maui Invitational...
"It will be a big challenge for us. Obviously it has to get better and that starts tomorrow in practice."
Wake Forest Freshman Guard Bryant Crawford
On his seven turnovers...
"We got split up. We needed to come back quickly and so we started playing faster, which caused us to turn the ball over."
On this game being a learning experience...
"Every game for me is a learning experience. I need to learn how to stay consistent with the turnovers, and at the same time be effective in the game."
Wake Forest Sophomore Guard Mitchell Wilbekin
On the last six minutes of the game...
"As a team we need to play better defense. They scored way too many points, and that just goes back to us talking together and being in the right spots."
On Sunday's win at Bucknell...
"It was nice to come from behind and get that win on the road, but it is important for us to start early. A lot of times, for us we get down early but we cannot do that in conference play. We need put together a good game for the full 40 minutes."
On where the game got away...
"We made some good plays, but most of our defensive plays just were not hitting the right spot. We were not communicating the way that we should have, and that starts tomorrow at practice."
