WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team fell, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22), to No. 22 North Carolina at Reynolds Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon. The loss dropped the Demon Deacons to 12-19 on the year with a 4-15 ledge in the ACC.
The defending conference champion Tar Heels have now won 10-consecutive matches in the teams' all-time series and extended their season-best win streak to 12 matches, improving to 20-8 on the year, including 17-2 in the league.
After playing to a 3-3 tie in the opening set, a Victoria McPherson kill gave the visitors the lead for good. Already leading 10-8, UNC went on a 6-1 run to seize the momentum it needed to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 win in the first frame.
North Carolina led for a majority of the second set after a Wake Forest attack error broke an 8-8 tie. The Tar Heels created separation with a 14-9 lead by virtue of a 9-2 run. A Matalee Reed kill brought the Deacs back within two at 18-16, but that was as close as they could make it as UNC won the set, 25-21, and claimed a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
The third stanza featured a match-high six tie scores, but the Demon Deacons were unable to force a fourth set. Wake Forest climbed out of a three-point hole to knot the score at 12 and used a Brianna Lynch kill to tie it again at 15, but a McPherson block gave North Carolina a lead it would not relinquish en route to a 25-22 win.
With Deacon digs leader Caroline Wolf out of the lineup, Sophia Dodd posted a double-double with 13 assists and a team-best 13 digs. Rachel Burau registered 25 assists.
Reed had a match-high 12 kills. Lynch and Kylie Long had nine kills apiece, while Hanna Lee had eight on eight attacks.
Wake Forest concludes its 2015 season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against NC State at Reynolds Gymnasium. The team will honor its four seniors, Reed, Megan Miller, Sam Boesch and Anna Carley, prior to the match.
