WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- In its 2015 season finale, the Wake Forest volleyball team was defeated, 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 26-24), by North Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Gymnasium. With 17 digs, sophomore Caroline Wolf upped her season total to 551, breaking Megan Thornberry's school record of 550 in 2008.
The Demon Deacon seniors, Matalee Reed, Megan Miller, Sam Boesch and Anna Carley, were honored before playing their final game in Old Gold and Black.
The team closed out the year with a 12-20 overall record, finishing 4-16 in ACC play.
NC State opened the match by taking control early in the first set. The Wolfpack used a three-point run to open up a 7-4 lead and later used a seven-point rally to up its advantage to 10 at 18-8 before going on to win, 25-15.
Neither team could create separation in the second frame as the teams played to 12 tie scores. Wake Forest trailed 17-14, but stormed back with a set-clinching 11-5 run, capped by three-straight points to end it on a Reed kill and back-to-back attacking errors by NCSU.
Out of the break, the Deacs fell into a hole they could not climb out of, falling behind 11-5. Wake Forest cut its deficit to two on three occasions, including 23-21, but NC State pulled out the 25-22 win on a kill by Morgan Cormier.
It looked as if the Wolfpack would cruise to a fourth-set triumph, but the Demon Deacons made things interesting. After falling behind 18-11, Wake Forest seized 11 of the next 15 points to knot the score at 22. After Hanna Lee's second ace of the day gave the Deacs set point at 24-23, back-to-back Cormier kills and a Deacon ball handling error clinched the overall victory for the Pack.
Lee had a standout match for the Deacs, tying Kylie Long for the team lead with nine kills and five total blocks, adding the team's only two aces. Rachel Burau had a strong effort from the setter position, finishing with 37 assists.
Reed's eight kills gave her a final Wake Forest career tally of 863, while her three blocks gave her 240. She finished 16th and 14th on the school's all-time list in those categories, respectively. Miller had six digs to surpass 1,200 for her career at 1,204, the fourth-most digs in program history.
Wolf will enter her junior season with 1,074 digs, the seventh-most ever by a Deacon.
