PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii -- The Wake Forest men's golf team concluded its fall season on Wednesday with the conclusion of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Freshman Cameron Young won his second consecutive individual title to lead the Demon Deacons to a runner-up finish.
Wake Forest shot 11-under during the final round to finish the tournament at 35-under, five shots behind champion Alabama.
"It was a nice day for the Demon Deacons to shoot 11-under par," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Alabama hit some good shots down the stretch to hold us off, but I'm so proud of these guys for shooting 35-under. Although we didn't win, there is still room for improvement as we go into the fall break. We will continue to work to get better for the spring. There is a long way to go this season, but I am very happy for the guys. They are listening and trying hard to get better, which is all you can ask for as a coach."
Young took the individual title at 15-under par after rounds of 66, 68 and 67. He also won the U.S. Collegiate Championship title last month in Atlanta. It is the third individual championship for a Demon Deacon this fall as Will Zalatoris won the season-opening Rod Myers Invitational at Duke.
Zalatoris finished this week's tournament T-6th at 8-under after shooting a final round 71 on Wednesday. The best round of the day for the Deacons was recorded by Paul McBride, who shot a final round 66. He finished the tournament T-22nd at 2-under. Davis Womble rounded out the scoring four for Wake Forest during the final round by shooting a 1-over round of 73. Kyle Sterbinsky ended the tournament with a 3-over round of 75 to finish the tournament at 3-under, tied for 20th place.
The Demon Deacons will return to action in February as they begin the spring season at the Mobile Sports Authority Invitational in Alabama.
